OUR QUALITY
All Joy of Jade products are made of 18K Gold or Rhodium vermeil on Sterling Silver and traditionally crafted.
Thanks to high quality materials, Joy of Jade Products keep their original color and shape longer than many others.
Gold Vermeil (1-micron 18K solid gold)
Joy of Jade gold vermeil jewelry is much higher in quality than regular gold-plated jewelry. Due to the very thick layer of 1-micron gold vermeil in 18K tone, you get precision and long durability at a much lower cost than gold jewelry.
What is gold vermeil?
Gold vermeil is a high-quality and specific version of gold plating that provides perfect balance of long-lasting wear and affordability. Gold vermeil should not be confused with lower quality flash-plated jewelry and gold-plated jewelry.
Gold vermeil which is also known as ‘heavy gold plating,’ employs the same process as gold plating. To be called "vermeil", the item must have sterling silver (aka 925 silver) as the base metal, the gold must be at least 10K and the plating must measure a certain thickness.
Our vermeil collection with a thick plating in 18K gold provides fantastic harmony of long-lasting and durability combined with affordable jewelry.
Vermeil has the benefit of being lighter than solid gold while keeping its precious and shimmering aspect and is an excellent pick if you have allergies to metals because it's made of hypoallergenic materials.
What is the differences between gold vermeil and gold-plated jewelry?
Some people assume the terms vermeil & gold plated are interchangeable, but these jewelry categories vary in very important ways. Because each type has a gold layer on the surface, it’s easy to confuse them.
Gold Vermeil is superior to gold-plated jewelry as vermeil has a lot more gold, hence more expensive and higher quality than gold-plated pieces.
Gold-plated pieces are cheaper than vermeil jewelry as they use any metal which often occurs in allergic reactions to the plating.
Gold-plated jewelry doesn’t require any minimum karat weight or thickness. The coating wears of very fast and will leave you with a tarnished jewelry piece.
Joy of Jade Gold Vermeil has 925 purity Sterling Silver Base and a very thick Gold Plating that is hypoallergenic and won’t tarnish many years.
Why ‘gold vermeil’ is more expensive than other ‘gold-plated’ jewelry?
Gold vermeil is more expensive than flash-plated and gold-plated jewelry because it uses sterling silver as the core material and uses considerably higher gold than gold-plated jewelry. We use 18-karat gold plating for its warm color, durability, and preciousness. Our 18K (karat) gold vermeil is one of the thickest available on the market and is 1 micron, which makes the jewelry more durable and resistant to tarnishing.
How long does ‘gold vermeil’ last?
The lifetime of Vermeil jewelry relies on layers of gold. The thicker the gold plating, the longer the life of the piece. Another factor to consider is the purity of the vermeil. As you may know, the higher the purity of gold, the softer it is and the more susceptible to scratches and damage.
Does ‘gold vermeil’ tarnish?
After long times of daily wear or too much chemical contact such as perfume, hairspray, soap, or lotion, it can start to tarnish. However, this does not have to be a permanent issue. With regular cleaning and maintenance, the tarnish can be removed, and the vermeil restored to sparkle.
What are the types of gold finishes?
Yes, it can be quite confusing to understand the differences between the various types of gold finishes that are commonly used in jewelry making. Here's a brief rundown of some of the most common terms you might come across:
- Solid gold: This refers to jewelry that is made entirely of gold, with no other metals mixed in. Solid gold jewelry is typically the most expensive type, as it contains a high percentage of pure gold.
- Gold plated: This refers to jewelry that has a thin layer of gold applied to the surface of a base metal through a process like electroplating. Gold plated jewelry is typically less expensive than solid gold jewelry, but the gold layer can wear off over time.
- Gold Vermeil: This refers to jewelry that has a thicker layer of gold (usually at least 1 micron) applied to the surface of a base metal through a electroplating process. Gold vermeil jewelry is more durable than gold plated jewelry, but it can be more expensive.
Rhodium-Vermeil Sterling Silver
Joy of Jade only carries rhodium-vermeil sterling silver hence they will not tarnish like sterling silver and will be more durable. Our rhodium-vermeil sterling silver is a popular choice for those who want a classy look, like fine jewelry.
What is difference between rhodium-vermeil sterling silver and sterling silver?
Both rhodium and sterling silver are precious metals that are used in jewelry making. They have some similarities, but the two metals are quite different.
You can’t tell the difference between rhodium-plated jewelry and sterling silver jewelry just by looking at it. These two options come in silverish.
Rhodium is a precious metal used as a plating metal to give other metals a shiny, protective finish, while sterling silver is an alloy of silver and other metals.
Rhodium-plated sterling silver is sterling silver with a layer of rhodium. It is a form of sterling silver crafted into a jewel. Both silver and rhodium are shiny metals; however, they are not equal. The lighter that metal reflects, the shinier it is. Thus, rhodium-plated jewelry has a high reflectivity rating of 70%, making it the shiniest metal, while silver jewelry's reflectivity rating is 40%.
Rhodium metal is among the most valuable metals on the market. It’s a rare and expensive metal that influences its price. Rhodium-plated silver a more expensive precious material than conventional 925 silver.
Rhodium is used for giving jewelry a 'diamond-like' sparkle due to its mirror-like finish. Sterling silver has a more muted appearance. The rhodium protects the silver, making it whiter and shinier, bringing out the brilliance of the stones adorning your jewel, and giving jewelry an edgy and white gold look. In terms of color, a piece of rhodium-plated silver jewelry is very similar to a piece of white gold jewelry. This makes jewelry even more stunning.
Because of its hard surface, the precious metal helps protect the silver base from scratches, dents, and other signs of damage. Secondly, the rhodium's protective layer helps slow the oxidation process, making it harder for your jewelry's surface to tarnish. Because rhodium is non-reactive, rhodium-plated jewelry will not tarnish like sterling silver. This ultimately increases the durability.
Because the metal rhodium does not contain nickel, it is hypoallergenic, does not cause skin reactions, is lustrous, and is resistant to corrosion.
If you're looking for a piece of jewelry that is more durable and will last longer, rhodium-plated silver is a better option than uncoated sterling silver.
